Komrads is lead by life partners and business partners Mark and Greet, 2 sneaker lovers. Seven years ago, when Mark still has his advertising agency, Mark was looking for a very specific sneaker for photoshoot. This led to the plan to re-market this sneaker, ‘Komrads’ was born. Reading about the alarming facts & distortions in the fashion industry, and our adolescent children making us realise that we were/are the generation that is endangering the climate, we decided to take action by developing a sustainable sneaker.
Developing our own Komrads shoe was an intensive quest that took us 1,5y. Together with the Artevelde University College of Ghent, we did thorough market research and in terms of materials, we tested all possibilities and ended up with recycled rubber, recycled cotton and PET bottles, and with apple leather as the most innovative component.
The Apple Eco leather is produced using waste from the apple juice Industry. The production of apple products is faced every year with a significant amount of waste. This waste (Apple peel and core) is developed into a new raw material, an ecological alternative to leather. The result is a cellulose-based material with at least 50% of recycled apple fiber. A versatile, durable, bio-based and high-quality alternative to leather with a low environmental impact.
Komrads strives to grow as an impact company. We create circular sneakers & apparel, by respecting all living creatures and by reusing and recycling the natural treasures the planet gives us every day, as we acknowledge that these are limited.
